Strong and glossy hair is a beauty trend that we all wish to achieve. But it can be frustrating when normal factors of our everyday life and environmental stressors wreck havoc on our journey to luscious locks. Professional hair treatments and trips to the salon can get quite expensive. But you know what? These kinds of self-care rituals aren’t always necessary! That’s right - there are numerous ways that you can improve the look, feel, and structure of your hairat home

1. Avoid Heat

We always want what we can’t have - and that includes the natural style of our hair. No matter how much you enjoy creating bouncy curls, or love the convenience of poker straight strands, try to avoid exposing your hair to heat. Not only can heat cause irreversible damage to the hair, but it can emphasize the appearance of split ends (1). If you’re interested in trying new looks, try heat-free styles made for your natural pattern!

2. Don’t Wash Your Hair As Often

Natural oils are your friends! When we shampoo our hair too frequently, we are most likely stripping it of all of its natural oils. These oils are essential for a healthy scalp and hair growth. If you feel the need to clean you hair several times a week, try one of the following techniques: a co-wash (aka, conditioner withvery mild surfactants), rinsing your hair with just water, or keeping the shampoo only on the scalp. Tip: Dry shampoo is a game changer, but finding the perfect match can be a process of trial and error. Get samples of various brands and find one that works for your hair type and oil production. Once you discover a go-to waterless shampoo, you’ll be on the path to training your hair to go longer periods without a wash.

3. Use A Silk or Satin Pillowcase

Friction can cause tangles and breakage overnight…literally. Just think about how many times you must roll over during the night while fast asleep. Hair strands rubbing against cotton or microfiber is a recipe for damage (2). Luckily, silk and satin allow your locks to glide against the pillow without any risks. Let every restful night be several hours of beauty sleep!Tip: If your hair falls below the shoulders, tie it up into  a loose bun on top of your hair to eliminate any additional breakage.

4. Be Gentle When Brushing

Similar to using the right kind of pillowcase, brushing your hair too aggressively can lead to breakage as well. Think about it. If you’re forcing a brush through mats and tangles, many strands are likely to snap.Tip: Begin brushing your hair from the bottom and work your way up. This will eliminate the amount of area susceptible to breakage. Plus, holding the hair will take away the painful process of tugging on your scalp. Brushing your hair this way will take a bit longer but will be totally worth it.

5. Use Sulfate-Free Products

Sudsy shampoo creates a luxurious shower experience, but is it worth the dryness? Sulfates are a tried and true surfactant used to cleanse the hair and scalp; however, they can remove all of the moisture necessary for your hair to be healthy (3). Drying out the scalp, which can lead to irritation, can eventually result in hair loss (4). Using sulfate-free shampoos is also a bonus if your hair is colored or chemically treated.

6. Take A Biotin Supplement

Biotin is an essential B vitamin that is beneficial to the entire body. It has also been shown to accelerate the production of Keratin, which, when consumed regularly, results in healthy hair growth over time. If you’re experiencing thinner hair or hair loss, it might be time to invest in a Biotin supplement. Luckily, KalaVita is launching our first-ever haircare gummy in just THREE DAYS for pre-order! We cannot wait for you to give it a try and experience glossy, strong, and beautiful hair!

7. Trim Your Hair Regularly

Though it might seem counterproductive to cut your hair so that it grows longer, trimming your hair every 6-8 weeks can do wonders for the overall health of your hair. Not only do split ends encourage more breakage, but it contributes to the look of unhealthy hair (5). Plus, when hair falls evenly in length, it creates the illusion of thicker and healthier locks.
